The purpose of life is happiness.
Is this a Yes or a No?
Aristotle said, “Happiness is the meaning and goal of life, the reason for our existence, and the value of our existence.”
After all, yes, it is happiness.
But hold on.
Listen to the words carefully.
Aristotle is not saying that the purpose of life is happiness.
Happiness is the subject of the sentence.
What is happiness, then?
The purpose of life is not happiness.
Ralph Emerson says.
The purpose of life is not to be happy.
It is to be useful, to be honorable, and to be compassionate.
We have been taught and vaguely believe that happiness is the purpose of life.
We have forgotten or even never thought about it.
Buddha said:
There is no way to happiness.
Happiness is the way.
